Dora Somosi: Alchemy of Memory
Upcoming exhibition
Overview
Photographer Dora Somosi explores the interplay of nature, memory, and artistic process through her hand-printed cyanotypes. Alchemy of Memory features two ongoing series, By Her Side and Mending, that together reflect on transformation, resilience, personal history, and the art of repair. By Her Side, Somosi captures abstracted tree branches as living portraits of women whose creativity and intellect have shaped her own perspective. Each branch becomes a visual metaphor for connection, growth, and the rooted histories of female artists, thinkers, and writers. In her Mending series, Somosi turns inward, reworking test prints and discarded cyanotypes through embroidery. Drawing on traditional Hungarian needlework and the Japanese art of kintsugi, which values imperfection and restoration, she stitches new meaning into material that would have been cast aside. The result is a tactile meditation on renewal and the beauty of endurance.
