Welcome to My Office
Maggie Taylor is a pioneering visual artist whose surreal, digitally composed images blend the sensibilities of photography, painting, and collage into a distinctive, dreamlike aesthetic. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1961, Taylor moved to Florida at age 11 and now lives and works on the outskirts of Gainesville, near a prairie inhabited by cows, alligators, and birds, a landscape that often echoes the whimsical and otherworldly tone of her work.
Taylor received a BA in Philosophy from Yale University in 1983, followed by an MFA in Photography from the University of Florida in 1987. After more than a decade as a still-life photographer, she began using digital tools in 1996 to construct her richly layered compositions. Her work invites viewers into intimate, often mysterious worlds, drawing inspiration from history, memory, and the subconscious.
Her images have been widely exhibited in solo exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. They are held in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University; the Harn Museum of Art, Gainsville; the Princeton University Art Museum; and the Museum of Photography in Seoul, Korea. Among her honors are two Florida Individual Artist Fellowships (1996, 2001), the Santa Fe Center for Photography’s Project Competition (2004), and the Ultimate Eye Foundation Grant (2005).
Maggie Taylor continues to push the boundaries of photographic expression, crafting visual narratives that are at once playful, poetic, and profoundly imaginative.
